RokSprocket was the go-to content module for many Joomla 3 sites. RocketTheme closed on 30 June 2025, and RokSprocket was only ever released for Joomla 3. If your site still uses it, you need a replacement before you move to Joomla 5 or 6. This guide shows how to rebuild your RokSprocket modules with JR Prism, layout by layout.
Short version: JR Prism has a matching layout for most RokSprocket modules. It works with Joomla articles and with your own manual items. Your template styles it, so it looks at home without extra CSS. Read the table below to check your modules, then follow the steps.
Which JR Prism layout replaces which RokSprocket layout?
| RokSprocket layout | Use in JR Prism | Edition | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strips | Strips | Pro | A horizontal row that visitors scroll, swipe or autoplay. Text over the image, or as a caption below it. Frame width 240 to 680 px, arrows, scrollbar. |
| Features (showcase / slideshow) | Carousel | Pro | One item at a time, with fade or slide animation, autoplay and pause on hover. |
| Sliders | Carousel or Strips | Pro | Use Carousel for one large item at a time. Use Strips to show several items side by side. |
| Tabs | Tabs | Lite (free) | Bootstrap 5 tabs. Each item title becomes a tab. |
| Lists (accordion) | Accordion, or Scroller | Lite (free) | Accordion opens one item at a time. Scroller shows a list of titles with a live preview next to it. |
| Grids | Card Grid | Lite (free) | Choose the number of items per row. |
| Mosaic | Mosaic | Pro | A magazine-style grid with the text over the images. Front-end filter or sort buttons are not available yet. |
| Headlines (ticker) | Not available. A Strips module with autoplay and the "text below" option is the closest match. | ||
| Quotes | Not available as its own layout. Many sites use a Card Grid with manual items for testimonials. | ||
| Tables | Not available. | ||

Where does the content come from?
| In RokSprocket | In JR Prism | Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Joomla provider, "Add Specific Articles" | Articles source: pick articles one by one and drag them into order | Lite (free) |
| Per-article display settings | Each picked article can have its own title, image, description and link | Lite (free) |
| Joomla provider, Category filter | Category source: one or more categories, with or without subcategories, and an item limit | Pro |
| Simple provider | Manual items: enter title, image, text and link yourself, with drag-and-drop order | Lite (free) |
| K2, EasyBlog, Zoo, Seblod, Content Builder, FieldsAttach | Not supported. JR Prism works with core Joomla articles and manual items. If your content is in K2, move it to Joomla articles first. | |
Filters and sorting
RokSprocket had a long list of filters (title, tag, featured, author, dates, hits and more). JR Prism keeps it simpler:
- Pick articles by hand (Lite), or pull whole categories (Pro).
- Sort by manual order, date, title, hits or random, ascending or descending (Pro). Lite uses your manual order.
- Filters by tag, featured, author or date range are not available yet. To get a similar result, put the articles in their own category, or pick them by hand.
How to move your RokSprocket modules, step by step
RokSprocket runs only on Joomla 3, and JR Prism runs on Joomla 5 and 6. So you cannot run both on the same site at the same time. Write down your RokSprocket setup first, then rebuild it with JR Prism after the upgrade.
On the Joomla 3 site, before the upgrade:
- Make a list of your RokSprocket modules. Go to Extensions > Modules and filter by type "RokSprocket".
- For each module, write down the title, position, layout, content source (articles, categories or Simple items) and the menu pages it shows on. Take a screenshot of the module on the front end. For Simple items, copy the titles, texts, links and image paths.
- Uninstall RokSprocket and RokCommon. They were made for Joomla 3 only, so remove them before the upgrade.
- Upgrade the site to Joomla 5 or 6.
On the upgraded site:
- Install JR Prism (Lite or Pro).
- Create one JR Prism module for each old module, in the same position. Choose the layout from the table above (Advanced tab, Layout).
- Add the content. On the Items tab, pick the articles, add manual items, or choose categories (Pro).
- Set the menu assignment to the same pages as before.
- Compare the page with your screenshot.

Recipes for common RokSprocket setups
1. Two strips with different sizes
In RokSprocket, one page often had a small strip and a large one. In JR Prism, all items in one strip have the same size, so use two modules:
- Module 1: Layout Strips, Frame Width 320 px.
- Module 2: Layout Strips, Frame Width 680 px.

2. A row with captions under the images that moves by itself
This replaces many RokSprocket Strips and template sliders with captions:
- Layout Strips, Text Position Below the image.
- Autoplay On, Autoplay Delay for example 4000 ms.
- Pick a Frame Width that shows the number of items you want in your column.
Autoplay stops when the mouse is over the row or when a visitor uses the keyboard. It has a pause button, and it never moves for visitors who turn on "reduce motion".

3. A Features slideshow
- Layout Carousel (Pro).
- Autoplay On, Animation Fade or Slide, Pause on Hover Yes.
- Use the Category source to always show the newest articles, sorted by date (Pro).

4. A Lists module
- For an accordion, use Layout Accordion (Lite).
- For a list of headlines with a preview next to it, use Layout Scroller (Lite).

Common questions when you move
- My custom titles show strange formatting.
- If a title was saved inside a paragraph tag by the editor, update to JR Prism 1.3.0 or later. It removes the outer tag for you.
- My Strips module shows only some of the items.
- Update to 1.3.1. In older versions, an "Items Per Page" value set while the module was a Scroller limited other layouts too.
- The images in Strips are cut to a different shape.
- With the Image Ratio set to Native, Strips uses 4:3 so all tiles line up. Choose another ratio, or set Image Fit to Contain (Pro).
- My old RokSprocket CSS does not work.
- JR Prism uses its own class names. Each module has the classes
mod-jrprismandlayout-<name>(for examplelayout-strips), and the items usejrp-classes. You can also add your own class in the module's Advanced tab. Most sites need little or no CSS, because JR Prism takes its colours and fonts from your template. - Does JR Prism work with my template?
- JR Prism uses standard Bootstrap 5 markup and works with Cassiopeia and most Joomla 5 and 6 templates.
