How to Build a Professional Website with Joomla (Beginner's Guide)

Joomla is a free, open-source content management system that lets you build a genuinely professional website - without writing code and without paying for a proprietary platform. It powers everything from small business sites to large portals.

If you're starting from scratch, here's the modern path to a Joomla site that looks the part and is built to last (on Joomla 4, 5, or 6) - not the outdated advice you'll find in older tutorials.

1. Get hosting and install Joomla

You need web hosting and a domain. Pick a host that meets Joomla's requirements - PHP 8.1+ (PHP 8.3+ for Joomla 6) and MySQL 8.0.13+ / MariaDB 10.4+ - and ideally offers a one-click Joomla installer and free SSL. Installation itself is quick: upload Joomla (or use the host's installer), create a database, and follow the web installer - a few screens and you have a working site.

2. Choose your template

Your template controls how the site looks. Joomla ships with Cassiopeia, a clean, responsive default that's a perfectly good starting point. You have three sensible routes:

• Use and customise Cassiopeia (or a child template of it) - free, fast, and fully responsive.
• Buy a quality third-party template if you want a specific look out of the box - just pick one that's actively maintained for current Joomla.
• Have one built to match your brand exactly.

Whatever you choose, make sure it's built for Joomla 4/5/6 and Bootstrap 5 - avoid abandoned templates from the Joomla 3 era.

3. Plan your structure

Before you pour in content, sketch your menus and categories. In Joomla, menus define both your navigation and your URLs, and categories organise your articles. A logical, shallow structure is easier for visitors and better for SEO.

4. Add your content

Write your pages as articles using Joomla's editor - no HTML needed. Use custom fields to add structured data (specs, prices, dates) to articles, and the Media Manager for images. Keep each page focused and useful.

5. Extend with the right extensions
