When building content-heavy websites, whether for podcasters, educators, or corporate clients, managing multimedia has always been a slight headache. Historically, if you wanted an author to upload a video, an audio track, and a downloadable PDF to a single article, they either had to paste messy HTML/iframes into the TinyMCE editor, or you had to install heavy third-party extensions.

With the release of Joomla 6.1, the core team has delivered a massive quality-of-life update for content creators and developers alike. As the official release notes highlight:

"Media Custom Fields: Three New Media Custom Field Options: Audio, Video & Documents. When creating Custom Fields for your content, you can now let content creators include any type of media, not just images."

I recently tested these new fields in my Joomla 6.1 environment to see how they perform in a real-world scenario. Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how to configure and use the new media fields to build cleaner, more structured content.

Step 1: Creating the New Media Fields

The beauty of this update is that Audio, Video, and Documents are now native field types. You create them exactly as you would a standard text or image field.

Navigate to Content > Fields > New. Under the Type dropdown, you will now see the new options.

For my test, I created a "Masterclass Episode" layout, requiring three specific fields:

  1. Video Clip (Video Type)
  2. Audio Track (Audio Type)
  3. Attachment / Resources (Document Type)

Pro-Tip on Display Settings: In the "Options" tab for each field, I set the Automatic Display to Do not automatically display. This is a crucial step for developers. By turning off the automatic rendering, it allows you to inject these fields exactly where you want them in your article layout (or custom template override) using the {field X} syntax, rather than having them awkwardly dumped at the very top/bottom of the page.

Step 2: The Content Creator's Experience

The biggest win with these new fields is the improved user experience for content authors. They no longer need to touch HTML or worry about breaking the page structure.

When creating a new article, the author simply clicks on the "Fields" tab. Here, they are presented with a clean interface to select their media directly from the Joomla Media Manager.

As you can see in my test:

  • I uploaded a .mov file and poster (thumbnail) for the video field.
  • An .mp3 file for the audio field.
  • A .pdf invoice for the document field.

It is incredibly intuitive. The author uploads the file, selects it, and saves the article. Joomla handles the rest.

Step 3: Frontend Rendering (The Final Result)

Because I set the fields to not automatically display, I was able to write my article content and insert the media precisely where it belonged using the shortcodes (e.g.,{field 1}{field 2}).

Article Fields Edit

Here is how Joomla natively renders these new field types on the frontend using clean web standards:

🎬 The Video Field

Instead of loading bloated third-party video players, Joomla automatically renders the .mov file using the native HTML5 <video> tag. It includes built-in, lightweight browser controls for play, pause, volume, and fullscreen, ensuring maximum performance and compatibility.

🎧 The Audio Field

Similarly, the .mp3 file generates a sleek player using the native HTML5 <audio> tag. This is absolutely perfect for podcasters or musicians who want a lightweight, standard-compliant way to stream audio directly from their articles without relying on external plugins.

📄 The Document Field

The document field creates a clean, formatted link to the .pdf file. Depending on the user's browser settings, clicking the link will either open the PDF natively in a new tab or prompt a safe download. This makes managing supplementary resources for educational or B2B sites incredibly simple.

Why This Architecture Matters

This update is about more than just convenience; it’s about structured data.

By separating the multimedia assets from the WYSIWYG editor text, you ensure that your website's layout remains unbreakable. If you decide to redesign your site next year, you won't have to manually edit hundreds of articles to fix broken iframe widths or outdated embed codes. The data (the media files) lives cleanly in the custom fields, and the template handles how it looks.
